BRIEF NOISE GLOSSARY

NOISE ABSORPTION - The measurement of a material’s ability to absorb noise.

AUDIOMETER - A device for measuring hearing acuity.

NOISE BAFFLE - A device hung from the ceiling or on walls to absorb noise.

NOISE BARRIER - Material used to Eliminate noise.

NOISE CLOUD - Acoustical panel hung overhead to absorb noise much like a baffle.

DECIBEL - Level of sound measured on a logarithmic scale.

ECHO - The reflected noise, such as in a gym or plant.

NOISE FREQUENCY - The number of cycles per time unit. Typically, high frequency noise is easier to control than low frequency noise.

HEARING RANGES - 20 - 20,000 Hz Understandable speech; 500 - 4500 Hz Normal speech

HERTZ - Measurement of noise frequency by cycles per second.

NOISE - Unwanted sound that interferes with hearing or annoys or irritates. 

NOISE REDUCTION COEFFICIENT (NRC) - A measurement of a material’s ability to absorb noise. 

NOISE REFLECTION - The noise that is reflected off a hard surface such as a floor, ceiling or wall in a gym or plant.

NOISE REVERBERATION - The repeated echoing of noise in a room or space.

SOUND - Sound is the mechanical disturbance of air.

SOUND LEVEL METER - A device that measures the level of sound.

SOUND TRANSMISSION COEFFICIENT (STC) - A measurement of a material’s ability to stop sound from traveling through it.
